Bistort (Polygonum bistorta) root has been used in various medical systems for centuries due to its astringent (stypic) and hemostatic properties.

1. Use in Unani Medicine

In Unani medicine, Bistort root is considered cold-dry (temper: class II).

Stopping blood flow: This root is best known for clotting and stopping blood (mahbaz-e-dam). Its decoction or infusion is given in case of piles (diarrhea/bloody piles), excessive menstruation (mucus), nosebleeds (hemorrhage) and bleeding from the stomach or intestines.

Diarrhea and dysentery: Due to its astringent properties, it is used to cure chronic diarrhea (dash) and cramps/diarrhea.

Wounds and swelling: Its water is used for mouth ulcers and swelling of the gums.

Popular Mixture: In Unani Medicine, Anjbar Syrup and Anjbar Jwarsh are commonly used to stop bleeding and strengthen the heart and stomach.

2. Uses in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, Anjbar (often known as Amlavet or Bistorta) is considered an astringent herb.

Balances Pitta and Kapha: It is used to reduce excess Pitta and Kapha in the body.

Bowel Health: In Ayurveda, it is recommended for treating Ulcerative Colitis and inflammation caused by stomach acid.

Skin Diseases and Wounds: A poultice of its root is applied to external wounds, burn marks and itchy skin.

 3. Position in Prophetic Medicine

There is no explicit or direct mention of the specific name "Anjbar" in the primary sources of Prophetic Medicine (Nabawi Hadith and books of Prophetic Medicine such as Allama Ibn al-Qayyim's "Al-Tibb al-Nabawi").

However, in the general guidelines and principles given in Prophetic Medicine for the use of natural herbs that are astringent, blood-stopping and stomach-repairing, Islamic scholars have included the properties of Anjbar under these same principled treatments.

Avoidance and Precautions

The following points should be taken into account while using Anjbar root:

Constipated patients: Since it is highly astringent, people suffering from severe constipation should not use it or should not take it without the advice of a doctor.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women: Do not use it during pregnancy without the advice of a medical professional or a physician.

Avoid excessive amounts: Excessive or unnecessary use of it can cause stomach upset, dryness, and indigestion.

Kidney and bladder stones: Injbar may contain oxalates, so patients with kidney stones should be careful.
